HM Queen Elizabeth II, Trooping the Colour, Horse guards Parade, 1977
by Michael Ward
"No matter how many times I was sent along to Horse Guards Parade to get a picture of Tooping the Colour, I never felt that I had done it too often, that every possible picture had been taken. Regimental colours were first paraded on the monarch's birthday in 1805, and more than 1,400 soldiers and 400 musicians from ten regimental bands always take part. The Queen is there, on horseback until 1987, and the crowds who turn out are always interesting. I tried to get pictures which showed the humanity of it rather than its military precision..."
